A pile of dead babies was found in Pedro Ernesto Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, said AFP on Monday.
Bodies of 40 newborn babies and fetuses were found left in a morgue at the Brazilian hospital.
Some corpses have been in the morgue refrigerator for up to five years. In addition to the dead babies, several body parts seemingly discarded from emergency amputation have also been found.
"It's something from a horror film," said prosecutor Ana Christina.
The hospital is known for its high-risk deliveries, which might be a reason why so many babies died.
The hospital's director Rodolfo Acatuassu Nunes told the Brazilian media that parents never collect the dead babies.
Prosecutors are now performing genetic tests of the babies to determine the identities of their parents.

브라질 병원서 아기 시체 40구 발견
브라질 리우데자네이루의 페드로 어너스토 병원(Pedro Ernesto Hospital)에서 아기 시체가 무더기로 발견되었다고 AFP통신이 월요일에 보도했다.
브라질의 한 병원의 시체 보관소에서 아기 및 태아 시체 40구가 발견될 당시 시체 냉장고에서는 5년도 더 된 시체가 발견되었다. 아기 시체뿐만 아니라 절단된 신체 부분도 덩달아 발견되었다.
경찰관 안나 크리스티나(Ana Chistina)는 “공포 영화를 보는 것 같습니다”라고 말했다.
이 병원은 출산위험이 큰 병원으로 유명하다. 경찰관 안나는 이 사실이 병원에 아기 시체가 쌓여있는 이유가 될 수 있다고 전했다.
병원 관계자 로돌포 아카투아수 눈스(Rodolfo Acatuassu Nunes)는 부모들이 아기 시체를 가져가지 않는다고 전했다.
경찰은 아기 시체들을 모아 유전자 검사를 해 부모를 밝혀낼 예정이다.
