Woori Bank said Monday its U.S. outlet has been sued over alleged sexual harassment of two local hires by a Korean manager.
The two male plaintiffs in their 30s filed a lawsuit against Woori Bank New York Agency as their reporting of the sexual harassment case to the headquarters in Seoul resulted in their layoffs, an official at Woori Bank said by telephone.
"The New York agency will hire a lawyer to handle the issue and it will be managed locally in the U.S.," the official said.
Two Korean-American employees at Woori Bank's New York operation brought the case to a New York-based court as they were sexually harassed by the Korean male manager during an office dinner in November 2012, he explained.
"But the layoffs were partly due to negligence of their duties. In fact, they didn't focus on their work for the last months preparing the lawsuit for compensations worth $3.5 million," he said.
Two months earlier, the Korean male manager was already accused of sexually harassing two other workers during a dinner meeting in September 2012.
The two male plaintiffs argued that they were not given work after their reporting via emails to Woori's headquarters in Seoul and were fired in April last year, according to local reports.
"There was no serious sexual harassment during the dinner in September. The female workers are still working in the New York agency. They didn't join the lawsuit filed by their male co-workers," the Woori official said.
"The manager (in his 40s) was called back to Seoul in March for an in-house investigation. He has since been excluded from duties," he said without elaborating further.
The two plaintiffs reportedly asked Woori Bank New York Agency to pay them $3.5 million (about 3.6 billion won) in compensation for the dismissal. Kim & Bae, P.C., a Manhattan-based law firm, represents them in New York.
The law firm and the two plaintiffs could not be reached for comment.
Woori Bank New York Agency, largely involved in foreign-exchange affairs, extends loans to Korean businesses operating in the U.S. The Korean bank had 28 employees on its payroll as of Monday.
Woori Bank runs five corporate bodies outside of Korea in Russia, Indonesia, China, Brazil, and the U.S. It posted 305.54 billion won ($299 million) in revenue in the first quarter ended March 31, up 59 percent from 192.29 billion won a year earlier.

우리은행 뉴욕지점 직원들이 사내의 성추행을 폭로했다가 부당 해고됐다며 소송을 냈다.
18일(현지시간) 뉴욕·뉴저지의 법무법인 김앤배(Kim&Bae, 대표 김봉준·배문경 변호사)에 따르면 이모, 신모씨 등 2명은 상사가 저지른 성추행 사건을 서울 본사에 알렸다가 해고를 당했다며 회사를 상대로 총 350만 달러(약 35억8천만원)의 배상을 요구하는 소송을 뉴욕법원에 제기했다.
이들은 소장에서 본사에서 파견된 한 주재원이 2012년 9월 전 직원이 모인 회식 자리에서 여직원 2명을 성추행한데 이어 11월에는 이를 무마하기 위한 회식을 열어 자신들에게도 성적인 폭력을 가했다고 주장했다.
해당 주재원은 여성에게 강제로 키스하거나 엉덩이와 허벅지를 더듬었고, 남성에게는 성기를 만지거나 성행위를 연상시키는 행위를 강요하는 등 성폭력을 일삼아 현지 채용인들이 심한 모욕감에 시달렸다고 이들은 밝혔다.
원고들은 이에 공식적으로 문제를 제기했으나 뉴욕지점은 사건을 덮는데 급급했고, 결국 서울 본사에 알린 끝에 지난해 3월 감사가 진행돼 문제의 주재원이 임기를 마치지 못하고 조기에 소환됐다고 설명했다.
하지만 이때부터 뉴욕지점 책임자는 자신들에게 일거리를 주지 않거나 주특기와 상관없는 부서에 배치하는 등 노골적인 보복에 나섰으며 결국 지난 4월 해고됐다고 이씨 등은 주장했다.
원고 측은 성추행 당시 법적 행위에 나서지 않은 것은 뉴욕지점 책임자가 현지인의 채용과 해고 등 인사의 전권을 행사하는 상황에서 회사에서 쫓겨나는 것이 두려웠기 때문이라며 당시 본사에 보낸 이메일 등을 증거물로 제출했다.
이들은 성추행과 회사 측의 지휘·감독 소홀, 보복조치 등에 대해 각각 100만달러 이상, 신씨가 당한 성폭력에 대해 50만달러 이상의 배상금을 요구했고 별도의 징벌적 배상금과 이자, 소송비용 등도 피고 측이 부담해야 한다고 주장했다.
원고 측 법률 대리인인 김봉준 변호사는 '피고 측은 성폭력 등 불법행위의 내부고발자에 대한 부당한 인사조치를 금지하는 뉴욕주의 노동법과 인권법을 어긴 것은 물론 주재원에게 미국의 고용 관행과 문화를 제대로 교육하지 않음으로써 지휘감독 업무를 소홀히 했다'고 말했다.
그는 '부당 해고의 경우 그로 인한 임금과 수당, 보너스 등의 손실분은 물론 그것에서 비롯된 제반 비용을 회사 측이 보전해야 할 의무가 있다'고 덧붙였다.
이에 대해 뉴욕지점 관계자는 '소송이 제기된 사실을 알고 있으며 본사 차원에서 대처하고 있는 것으로 안다'고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
