Kim Tae-ho, a lawmaker from President Park Geun-hye's Saenuri Party, is taking a public relations beating for posturing at the funeral of five firefighters who died in helicopter crash in Gwangju last week.
Kim, a veteran politician and once a prime ministerial candidate, was seen smiling and taking photos with a woman at the funeral in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, on Tuesday. The woman, whose uniform made her look smarter than she probably was, seemed happy about the Kodak moment, raising her left hand to form a "V."
The image did not go well with Twitter users ― some of them accused Kim and the woman as "psychopaths."
Taken aback by the controversy, Kim tweeted out an apology on Wednesday.
"An acquaintance asked if I could take a picture with her. I admit I shouldn't have," he wrote.
The five firefighters were returning to their Gangwon headquarters after assisting on the search for victims' bodies at the site of the sunken Sewol ferry in Jindo Island, South Jeolla Province, when their helicopter crashed in the suburbs of Gwangju.

22일 오전 강원도청에서는 도 소방본부 특수구조단 1항공구조대 순직 대원 5명의 영결식이 치러졌다. 그런데 영결식 종료 후 김 위원이 소방공무원으로 추정되는 여성과 함께 기념사진을 찍었으며, 한술 더 떠 김 위원 옆의 여공무원은 손으로 브이(V)를 그리는 등 상황과 맞지 않는 모습이 포착되면서 네티즌들을 격분케 했다.
사진이 공개된 직후 여러 온라인 커뮤니티는 성난 네티즌들의 글로 가득 찼다.
문제가 커지자 김 위원은 즉시 사과했다. 그는 이날 오후 자신의 트위터에 “영결식장 사진촬영으로 물의를 일으켜 죄송하다”며 “지인으로부터 사진 촬영하자는 요청을 거부하지 못하고 찍은 것은 이유 여하를 막론하고 잘못된 행동이었다”고 글을 올렸다. 이어 “사려 깊지 못한 행동으로 유족과 고인을 애도하는 분들에게 상처를 준 것에 대해 진심으로 사과드린다”고 덧붙였다.
한편 소방 홍보대사 자격으로 영결식에 참석했던 가수 김장훈은 중년 여성의 사진촬영 요청에 발끈하며 자리를 뜬 것으로 알려졌다. 엄숙한 상황 속 경박한 모습에 평소 바른 생활로 유명한 김장훈이 순간 화를 참지 못한 것으로 보인다.
