Uli Stielike's experiments in his coaching debut for South Korea's national football team proved successful against Paraguay, Friday, as his men defeated their opponents 2-0.
Before the match, the German boss expressed his intention to address the team's main weakness ― a lack of decisiveness resulting in numerous failures to capitalize on chances.
But in the friendly match in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, the South Koreans pushed the Paraguayans hard right from the beginning. As a result, they dominated the match.
Under the new coach's leadership, Kim Min-woo scored the first goal in the 27th minute and Nam Tae-hee netted another in the 32nd. Interestingly enough, both moments marked the players' debut goals in the international A match.
In the second half, Stielike continued experimenting with his roster, injecting new players and strengthening the team's offense.
First, Bayer Leverkusen winger Son Heung-min replaced Lee Chung-yong. Then, 14 minutes later, Lee Dong-gook ― at 35, the oldest player on the team ― was called up to replace midfielder Cho Young-cheol.
Minutes later, Lee Myeong-ju and Park Jong-woo were also put in action to replace Nam Tae-hee and Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-yueng, respectively. With just five minutes remaining, Kim Young-gwon replaced Kim Ki-hee.
Despite their continuous attacking efforts and chances, they failed to score another goal, but it seemed meaningful that the coach employed different tactics with different players on a roster that includes a group of veterans as well as new faces.
But the match also gave the coach some other concerns, as his team's defense line was occasionally distracted and allowed the Paraguayans some critical chances ― although their attempts were successfully denied by Kim Jin-hyeon, who had long been considered only as a backup for the team's No. 1 goalkeeper, Kim Seung-gyu.
With the victory, the Taeguk Warriors have extended their winning streak to three, with victories in every friendly match since their dismal campaign in the Brazil World Cup, which led Stielike's predecessor Hong Myung-bo to resign.
Last month, the Koreans had two matches, just days after Stielike's appointment. With the new coach watching, the Koreans defeated Venezuela 3-1 and lost to Uruguay 1-0.
After Paraguay, South Korea will take on Costa Rica next Tuesday in Seoul.

한·파라과이축구- '골! 골!'…슈틸리케 데뷔전 승리
태극전사들이 화끈한 골 폭죽을 앞세워 울리 슈틸리케(60·독일) 한국 축구 대표팀 감독의 데뷔전을 승리로 장식했다.
슈틸리케 감독이 이끄는 축구 대표팀은 10일 천안종합운동장에서 열린 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 랭킹 60위인 파라과이와의 평가전에서 전반 27분 김민우(사간 도스)의 결승골과 전반 32분 남태희(레퀴야SC)의 릴레이골이 터지면서 2-0으로 이겼다.
특히 김민우와 남태희는 각각 A매치 7경기와 13경기 만에 태극마크를 달고 첫 골 맛을 보는 기쁨을 맛봤다.
이로써 FIFA 랭킹 63위의 한국은 파라과이와의 역대 전적에서 2승3무1패로 앞서게 됐다. 더불어 대표팀은 지난달 8일 우루과이에 0-1로 패하면서 가라앉았던 분위기를 되살리는 데 성공했다.
'슈틸리케호'는 14일 오후 8시 서울월드컵경기장에서 북중미의 강호 코스타리카(FIFA 랭킹 15위)와 평가전을 치른다.
슈틸리케 감독의 파격적인 선수 기용과 기회를 잡은 '벤치 멤버'들의 맹활약이 어우러진 완벽한 승리였다.
더불어 지난 7일 소집돼 호흡을 맞출 시간이 단 사흘밖에 되지 않았지만 공격진에서 보여준 창의적인 움직임과 순도 높은 골 결정력은 팬들을 깜짝 놀라게 하기에 충분했다.
특히 슈틸리케 감독이 지적한 대표팀의 허약한 골 결정력을 치유하는 방법을 '벤치 멤버'들이 제대로 보여준 한판이었다.
슈틸리케 감독은 파라과이를 상대로 그동안 백업 자원으로 주로 활용된 조영철(카타르SC)을 원톱 스트라이커로 내세우고 처진 스트라이커에 남태희(레퀴야SC)를 배치하는 실험적인 전술을 선택했다.
좌우 날개에 김민우(사간 도스)와 이청용(볼턴)이 출격한 가운데 중원은 경험 많은 기성용(스완지시티)-한국영(카타르 SC) 조합이 맡았다.
포백은 2년 11개월 만에 태극마크를 단 홍철(수원)과 이용(울산)이 좌우 풀백으로 나섰고, 곽태휘(알 힐랄)와 김기희(전북)가 중앙 수비수를 맡았다. 골키퍼 장갑은 A매치 3경기째인 김진현(세레소 오사카)에게 돌아갔다.
선발 멤버 가운데 5명의 A매치 경력이 한자릿수에 불과할 정도여서 킥오프 직전 팬들의 우려를 자아냈지만 기우에 불과했다.
전반 초반 슈틸리케 감독의 지시에 따라 중원에서 상대에게 허점을 내주지 않는 수비적인 움직임을 보여줬다. 전진 패스보다는 완벽한 기회를 노리면서 횡패스와 종패스 위주로 다소 헐거운 경기를 펼쳐 관중의 답답함을 느끼게 했다.
그러나 전진을 위한 일보 후퇴의 성격이 짙었다. 전반 14분 조영철의 킬러 패스를 받은 남태희가 골키퍼와 1대1 기회를 만든 것을 신호탄으로 태극전사들은 본격적인 공세에 나섰고, 마침내 김민우가 포문을 열었다.
전반 27분 파라과이 수비수의 패스미스를 놓치지 않은 이청용이 오른쪽 측면에서 크로스를 내주자 반대쪽에 포진했던 김민우가 페널티지역 왼쪽에서 오른발 슈팅으로 파라과이의 골 그물을 흔들었다. A매치 7경기 만에 맛본 데뷔골이었다.
포문이 열리자 남태희가 바통을 이어받았다.
남태희는 전반 32분 이용이 오른쪽 측면에서 찔러준 크로스를 득달같이 달려들며 페널티지역 오른쪽에서 오른발 슈팅으로 파라과이의 골키퍼를 무력화시켰다.
그동안 대표팀에서 오른쪽 측면과 중앙 미드필더에서 자기 자리를 제대로 잡지 못했던 남태희로서는 새 감독의 지휘봉 아래 중앙 미드필더로 볼 배급과 득점까지 책임지는 확실한 플레이로 눈도장을 제대로 찍었다.
한국은 전반 43분 남태희의 패스를 받은 조영철의 슈팅이 또 한 번 골대에 꽂혔지만 오프사이드가 선언돼 아쉬움을 남겼다.
슈틸리케 감독은 후반전 시작과 함께 이청용 대신 손흥민(레버쿠젠)을 투입하고, 후반 14분 조영철을 빼고 '라이언킹' 이동국(전북)을 투입하며 확실한 승부수를 던졌다. (연합뉴스)
