Rep. Park Jie-won and Hyundai Group's Chairwoman Hyun Jeong-eun have requested to visit Gaeseong in North Korea, a government official said Sunday.
It has been a week two South Korean delegations from the Kim Dae Jung Peace Center and from Hyundai Group made a separate one-day trip to the North to deliver a wreath commemorating the third anniversary of the death of the reclusive state's late leader Kim Jong-il.
The request was made following an invitation from Pyongyang.
Last Friday, Kim Yang-gon, director of the North Korean United Front Department, invited aides of the late President Kim Dae-jung and officials of the Hyundai Group to express gratitude for their visits to the North.
"Following the North's invitation, officials of the Kim Dae-jung Peace Center and Hyundai Asan Group called for permission to visit North Korea on Dec. 24," a unification ministry official said. "The government plans to decide on whether to approve it around Dec. 23."
It is not immediately clear why Kim Yang-gon, who is in charge of relations with the South, invited them again, even though Won Dong-yon, the deputy head of the committee, had expressed gratitude to the South Korean delegation at the meeting on the anniversary.
There is a speculation that the North will make it an opportunity to remind the South of its stance on inter-Korean relations. "North Korea has expressed its desire to resume talks with the South," said Kim Yeon-chul, a professor of unification studies at Inje University.
However, he cautioned against raising expectations about the proposed visit. "The North could simply deliver its basic stance once again," said the professor.
"The improvement of inter-Korean relations now depends on the South Korean government. President Park needs to show her willingness to the North if she wants to thaw strained relations," he added.

박지원 새정치민주연합 의원과 현정은 현대그룹 회장이 24일 개성공단을 방문하겠다고 신청한 것으로 전해졌다.
통일부 당국자는 21일 '북측의 방북 요청에 따라 김대중평화센터와 현대아산 측이 24일 방북하겠다고 신청했다'면서 '승인 여부를 23일께 결정할 계획'이라고 말했다.
이번 방북 신청은 김정일 3주기에 김대중 전 대통령의 부인 이희호 여사 및 현정은 회장이 조의를 표시한 데 대해 북한 김양건 통일전선부장 겸 대남비서가 감사 인사를 전하고 싶다며 방북을 지난 19일 요청한 데 따른 것이다.
김대중평화센터 측은 박지원 의원과 김성재 전 문화부 장관 등이, 현대아산은 현정은 회장과 조건식 사장 등이 방북하겠다고 각각 신청한 것으로 알려졌다.
박지원 의원과 김대중평화센터 관계자들은 김정일 3주기를 하루 앞둔 16일 개성을 방문해 이희호 여사 명의의 조화를 전달했고, 같은 날 현대아산도 조건식 사장 등이 개성에서 현정은 회장 명의의 조화를 전한 바 있다.
당시 북측에서는 원동연 조선아시아태평양평화위원회 부위원장이 나와 김정은 국방위원회 제1위원장의 사의를 이미 남측에 전한 바 있어 김양건이 이번에 다시 초청한 배경이 관심이다. (연합뉴스)
