Kim Kwan-jin, the head of Cheong Wa Dae's National Security Office (NSO) is likely to visit China soon for meetings with high-ranking Chinese officials, according to sources familiar with the issue Sunday.
If realized, this will be the first time for Kim, as chief of the nation's foreign policy and security control tower, to visit China since he took office in June last year.
Several government officials said on condition of anonymity that Seoul and Beijing are in last-minute discussions about Kim's itinerary.
On Sunday, presidential spokesman Min Kyung-wook confirmed that Seoul and Beijing have been discussing the matter.
"As of now, however, there is nothing that I can say because the responsible authorities of the two sides are still discussing the details," Min told The Korea Times.
During a summit held in June 2013, President Park Geun-hye and her Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping agreed to establish a dialogue channel between the chief of the NSO and the Chinese Cabinet minister in charge of foreign affairs. The first meeting took place in Seoul in November last year.
During any second meeting in Beijing, Kim and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi are expected to discuss a variety of bilateral and regional issues.
Officials who are familiar with the matter said that among several issues, inter-Korean relations will be one as the two Koreas recently expressed their willingness to confer.
China has long been North Korea's benevolent, key trading partner.
Seoul is hoping that Beijing can use this relationship to play a role in persuading Pyongyang to improve relations between the two Koreas, officials said.
The two sides are also expected to exchange ideas about China-North Korea relations which have turned sour after Bejiing showed signs of distancing itself when President Xi took power.
Kim and Yang will also exchange their views about the developments of East Asian affairs following the trilateral military intelligence sharing pact among South Korea, the United States and Japan.
Some speculated that Kim may pay a visit to Chinese leader Xi, given that Yang paid a courtesy visit to President Park in 2013 when he visited Seoul for the first talks with Kim.

김관진, 남북관계 진전 관측 속 조만간 중국 방문
우리 정부의 외교·안보정책 컨트롤타워 역할을 하는 김관진 청와대 국가안보실장이 조만간 중국을 방문할 것으로 11일 알려졌다.
복수의 정부 소식통은 이날 한중 양국이 이와 관련된 최종적인 일정 조율을 하고 있다고 전했다.
지난해 6월 임명된 김 실장이 안보실장 자격으로 중국을 찾는 것은 이번이 처음이다.
이번 방문은 형식적으로는 양제츠(楊潔지) 중국 외교담당 국무위원의 2013년 11월 방한에 대한 답방 성격이다.
한중 양국은 2013년 6월 정상회담에서 청와대 국가안보실장과 중국 외교담당 국무위원간 대화체제를 만들기로 합의했으며 이에 따라 같은 해 11월 첫 회의가 서울에서 열렸다.
김 실장의 중국 방문으로 이번에 열리게 될 2차 회의에서 양국은 한반도 문제와 관련한 포괄적인 논의를 할 것으로 예상된다.
특히 우리 정부의 적극적인 남북대화 제의와 북한의 신년사 이후 남북관계 개선에 대한 기대가 높아진 가운데 한중 양국이 향후 남북관계 진전 문제와 관련된 깊이 있는 논의를 할 가능성이 크다는 관측이 나오고 있다.
우리측은 이번 회의에서 남북대화 진전을 위해 중국이 북한에 영향력을 발휘해달라는 입장을 전달하는 한편 남북관계 진전을 위해서는 북핵 문제가 해결돼야 한다는 점도 강조할 것으로 예상된다.
양국은 또 올해 북중 관계에 대한 논의도 있을 것으로 예상된다.
중국은 김정은 북한 국방위원회 제1위원장의 생일인 8일 외교부 홈페이지에서 북중간의 끈끈한 관계를 상징하는 이른바 '16자 방침'을 거론하는 등 북한과의 관계 개선을 희망하는 모습을 최근 보이고 있다.
이밖에 한중 양국은 미국의 미사일방어(MD)체제와 사드(고고도미사일방어체계) 한반도 배치 가능성, 한미일 군사정보 공유 약정, 일본의 집단자위권 행사 등 동북아 정세 및 안보 관련 이슈도 논의할 것으로 관측된다.
김 실장은 이번에 중국을 방문하면 시진핑(習近平) 중국 국가주석을 예방할 가능성도 높아 보인다.
앞서 양제츠 국무위원도 2013년 방한시 박근혜 대통령을 예방한 바 있다.
