A Seoul National University (SNU) professor is under investigation for allegedly misappropriating government subsidies of about 200 million won ($181,000), the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) said Monday.
The science professor, whose identity was withheld, allegedly misappropriated the funds from 2011 to 2014, and submitted a false report to inflate research costs.
He allegedly used some of the money to run a start-up company, and the rest to support his brother's company.
The allegations came a week after the state auditor concluded an investigation into another SNU professor, surnamed Kim, on similar charges.
It is alleged that Kim illegally received about 310 million won ($281,000) in government funds by forging documents, and embezzled about 220 million won ($199,000) from July 2008 until May last year, said the BAI.
The auditor referred Kim's case to the prosecution, and asked the university to dismiss him.
SNU refused to comment on whether Kim would be dismissed, saying the level of punishment would depend on the prosecution's findings.
The BAI said that Kim allegedly forged reports to win the subsidy using the names of his graduate students, who were unqualified to apply for such funding because they held jobs at private companies at the time of application.
Kim also used their stamps, bank accounts and pin numbers in forging documents to make it look like they withdrew the money,
Under the students' names, Kim received monthly payments ranging from about 500,000 won ($453) up to 1.8 million ($1,600) per person.
Kim denied the allegations saying he spent the money on his students' tuition and his office expenses for administrative reasons.
However, the BAI dismissed his claim because of a lack of evidence of such expenditure.
The BAI ordered five government institutions to recover the misused funds they approved for Kim.
The five include the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning; the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST); the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP); the Korea Environmental Industry and the Technology Institute (KEITI) Korea Agency for Infrastructure Technology Advancement (KAIA).
The BAI also plans to ban Kim from participating in any government project.

끊이지 않는 교수들의 성추행…학교가 경찰에 고발
덕성여대 교수가 학생을 성추행한 혐의로 경찰에 고발됐다.
16일 경찰 등에 따르면 이 대학은 지난 1월 중순 박상임 총장 직무대행 명의로 이 학교 A교수가 제자를 성추행했다며 서울 도봉경찰서에 고발장을 냈다.
A교수는 지난해 2월 '저녁이나 같이 먹자'며 피해자를 개인 사무실로 불러냈고 소주와 맥주를 섞은 술을 함께 마셨다.
이후 A교수는 피해자에게 갑자기 입맞춤을 하는 등의 추행을 했다는 의혹을 받고 있다.
학교 측은 지난해 12월 24일 신고를 받고 세 차례에 걸쳐 성희롱·성폭력 대책위원회 회의를 열고 진상조사를 벌여 A교수가 학생을 성추행한 사실을 인정한 녹취를 확보한 것으로 알려졌다.
A교수는 작년 12월 31일 직위 해제됐으며, 인사위원회를 거쳐 학교법인에 징계가 요구된 상태다. 또 학교 측은 지난달 20일 A교수를 상대로 피해자에게 접근 금지 가처분 신청까지 냈다.
박상임 총장 직무대행은 보도자료를 통해 '학교는 학생상담센터에 사건이 접수된 즉시 해당 교수를 학생들로부터 격리하기 위해 직위해제 조치를 했다'며 '휴대전화 메시지, 녹취록, 탄원서 등 증거를 종합해 검토한 결과 혐의 사실에 상당성이 있다는 판단 아래 법률 자문을 거쳐 고발했다'고 설명했다.
이어 '표현할 수 없는 고통을 받은 피해 학생에게 진심으로 안타까운 마음과 유감을 표한다'며 '피해 학생을 위해 할 수 있는 모든 지원과 노력을 할 것'이라고 덧붙였다.
A교수는 한 차례의 경찰 조사에서 '술을 마신 것은 맞으나 성추행한 적은 없다'고 혐의를 부인했다.
경찰은 A교수를 조만간 불러 다시 조사할 예정이다. (연합뉴스)
