A fire broke out on North Korea's side of the heavily guarded demilitarized zone (DMZ) on Monday afternoon, South Korean authorities said.
The fire spread through the barbed-wire fence separating the two Koreas at 1:15 p.m., reaching the Dora Observatory in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province.
"The fire started in North Korean territory and spread south," an official said.
The northern region of Gyeonggi Province recently issued a drought warning.
Seven fire engines and about 50 firemen fought the blaze.
Officials also sought North Korean approval to use three helicopters.
Custom Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ), the transit office for the people working at the joint Kaesong Industrial Complex, was temporarily closed from 2 p.m.
There were no reports of injuries.

도라산전망대 인근 DMZ 화재…"북한서 시작 남하"
23일 오후 1시 15분께 경기도 파주시 장단면 도라산전망대 인근 비무장지대(DMZ)에 불이 나 군 당국이 진화 중이다.
불은 북측 DMZ에서 시작돼 강풍을 타고 삽시간에 도라산전망대 주변까지 내려온 것으로 알려졌다.
소방 당국자는 '현재 이 일대는 뿌연 연기가 가득 뒤덮힌 상태'라고 전했다.
관계 당국은 '불은 북한 측 지역에서 시작돼 남하한 것으로 파악했다'고 밝혔다.
현재 파주시와 군 당국 등은 소방차 7대와 산불진화대원 50여명을 동원해 산불이 번지는 것을 막고 있다.
또 북한 승인을 받아 헬기 3대를 동원해 진화에 나설 방침이다.
화재 현장 가까이에 경의선 남북출입사무소(CIQ)가 있다.
당국은 만약의 사태에 대비해 CIQ를 통한 개성공단으로의 출입경을 통제하고 있다.
다행히 월요일인 이날은 도라산전망대 등을 둘러보는 'DMZ 안보관광' 휴일이라, 민간인 출입이 제한돼 현재까지 인명피해는 없는 것으로 확인됐다.
한편, 한반도 중북부지역에는 지난해부터 기록적인 가뭄이 이어지는 가운데 며칠째 곳곳에서 산불이 잇따랐으며, 23일 경기북부 전역에는 건조특보가 내려져 있다. (연합뉴스)
