President Park Geun-hye's approval rating fell sharply to 29 percent, the lowest since she took office in February 2013.
The Gallup weekly poll of 1,000 adults was conducted for three days from June 16 with a margin of error of plus or minus of 3.1 percentage points.
The figure represents a drop of 4 percentage points from a week earlier.
Sixty-one percent negatively assessed Park's performance, up three percentage points from the previous week.
Among those who were negative about Park's performance, 33 percent said the Park government failed to control the spreads of MERS.
Twelve percent questioned Park's leadership and the same number of respondents cited her lack of communication skills as key factors that made them lose their confidence in the president.
Support for Park among citizens in their 20s, 30s and 40s hovered around 10 percent, whereas her ratings among those who are in their 60s or older were around 60 percent.
The survey showed that support for Park dropped more than 10 percentage points among the residents of Chungcheong and Gyeongsang provinces.
South and North Gyeongsang provinces are the ruling Saenuri Party's home turf.
This marks the third time that Park's job approval rating has sunk to 29 percent this year.
The government has been under fire for its poor initial response to the outbreak of the virus.
Park has repeatedly vowed to end the spread of the virus, but the poll results suggest that she failed to win back the public's confidence.
Regarding the ratings for political parties, the ruling Saenuri Party got 40 percent while the opposition New Politics Alliance for Democracy (NPAD) registered 25 percent, followed by the splinter Justice Party's 3 percent.
Saenui's rating remained the same as the previous week, while the NPAD's marked an increase of 3 percentage points.

한국갤럽은 이번주 박근혜 대통령의 국정수행에 대한 지지율이 29%로 급락해 취임 이후 최저치를 기록했다고 19일 밝혔다.
갤럽에 따르면 지난 16일부터 18일까지 3일간 전국의 만 19세 이상의 성인남녀 1천명을 대상으로 설문조사(95% 신뢰수준 ±3.1%포인트, 응답률 15%)한 결과 박 대통령의 직무 수행에 대한 긍정 평가비율은 29%로 집계됐다.
부정 평가 비율은 61%로 집계됐으며 9%는 의견을 유보했다.
대통령 직무 긍정률은 지난주 대비 4%포인트 하락한 반면 부정률은 3%포인트 상승해 긍정·부정률 격차가 32%포인트로 벌어졌다.
박 대통령의 직무 긍정 평가율 29%는 취임 이후 최저치로 연말정산, 증세 논란이 일었던 올해 1월 넷째주, 2월 첫째주에 이어 세 번째라고 한국갤럽은 밝혔다.
지역별로는 충청권과 영남권에서 대통령의 직무긍정률이 10%포인트 이상 하락한 것으로 나타났다.
대구·경북(55%→41%), 부산·울산·경남(41%→29%), 대전·세종·충청(36%→23%) 모두 직무긍정률이 10%포인트 이상 하락했는데, 이들 지역은 메르스 확진·사망 또는 경유 병원이 추가로 또는 다른 지역에 비해 늦게 나타난 곳이기도 하다.
이 중 대구·경북에서 40%대 초반까지 급락하며 부정평가율이 긍정평가율을 앞선 것은 지난 2월 둘째주(긍정 44%, 부정 53%) 이후 처음이다.
세대별로 긍정·부정률을 보면 20대가 13%·77%, 30대가 11%·84%, 40대가 16%·71%, 50대가 40%·49%, 60세 이상이 60%·27%로 50대에서 2주 연속으로 부정평가율이 긍정평가율을 앞섰다.
대통령 직무수행 부정 평가자(606명)는 부정 평가의 이유로 '메르스 확산 대처 미흡'(33%)을 가장 큰 이유로 꼽았다. 다음은 '국정운영이 원활치 않다'(12%), '리더십 부족·책임 회피'(12%), '소통 미흡'(11%) 등의 순이었다.
갤럽은 '메르스 사태가 3주째 대통령 직무평가의 가장 큰 요인으로 작용하는 것으로 보인다'고 설명했다.
한편 정당 지지도는 새누리당 40%, 새정치민주연합 25%, 정의당 3%를 각각 기록했으며, 없음·의견유보는 32%였다.
새누리당의 지지도는 지난주와 동일했으며, 새정치연합은 지난주보다 3%포인트 상승했다. (연합뉴스)
