A total of 1,600 paper pandas made by French artist Paulo Grangeon will be on display near Seokchon Lake in southern Seoul from today.
The free exhibition, which will continue until July 30, follows last year's successful display of a floating 16-meter rubber duck, the work of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman, according to the Songpa District Office.
The opening ceremony is today and the exhibition will be open to the public on Friday.
The pandas were previously displayed at Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall, the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts and Dongdaemun Design Plaza. Outside Seoul, they were also displayed in Busan and Daejeon.
The French artist is having a global tour with the paper pandas in an effort to raise awareness for endangered species, in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature.
The 1,600 paper pandas represent the number of real pandas left on Earth. The animal originated in southern China. Its population decreased over the years as farming, deforestation and other development drove them from the land where they used to live.
The pandas on display are made from recycled paper.
The international tour began in 2008, and has visited eight countries including Italy, Switzerland, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Korea is the ninth destination.
The district office hopes the exhibition will draw visitors to stores in the area, which have been struggling since the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

지난해 500만명 이상의 발걸음을 붙잡았던 러버덕에 이어 이번에는 판다 조형물 1천600마리가 서울 송파구 석촌호수를 깜짝 방문한다.
송파구(구청장 박춘희)는 지난해 '러버덕 프로젝트'에 이어 올해는 세계인이 열광하는 공공설치미술 프로젝트 '1600 판다 플러스 코리아 투어'를 2일부터 30일까지 석촌호수 동호 일대에서 연다고 1일 소개했다.
2008년 프랑스에서 처음 시작된 '1600 판다의 세계여행'은 세계자연기금과 프랑스 조각가 파울로 그랑종이 멸종 위기에 처한 대표적 동물인 판다를 개체 수 만큼 재활용 종이로 제작, 세계 곳곳에 전시하는 프로그램이다.
1천600마리의 판다들은 그동안 네덜란드, 독일, 스위스, 이탈리아, 홍콩 등 8개 국가를 거쳐 9번째로 대한민국을 방문했다. 5월 23일부터 지난달 30일까지 전국을 돌며 플래시몹 형태의 소규모 투어를 했다. (연합뉴스)
