Nearly 4,700 hogs have been slaughtered on Jeju Island following an outbreak of deadly swine fever this week.

This was the first outbreak of the highly infectious animal disease on the resort island in 18 years, and the first in Korea since 2013, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP). The disease is harmless to humans, it said.

Authorities have kept contaminated pig farms off-limits to prevent further spread of the disease while closely monitoring their employees. Officials said the disease was unlikely to be widespread as other regions have vaccinated pigs against it.
