The 14th annual PyeongChang Music Festival & School began Tuesday with the Renowned Performers Series which featured Ensemble The Bridge opening the first day of performances, titled "PyeongChang," of the "Gangwon" series which tours eight regions in the province.

The first performance featured Mozart, Bartok, Bach and Tchaikovsky. The rest of the series' performances are slated for July 20 in Wonju, July 24 in Jeongseon, July 25 in Chuncheon, July 26 in Taebaek, July 31 at the Seamarq Hotel, Aug. 3 in Hoengseong and Aug. 7 in Daegwallyeong.

Cellist Lluis Claret will be collaborating with the Chuncheon Philharmonic Orchestra while pianist Kevin Kenner will perform in Jeongseon and Taebaek. The final performance on Aug. 7 will be performed by the festival's artistic director Chung Kyung-wha who will add narration to her performance. She has been participating in the program for four years with support and wide enthusiasm from the local community. The program list will be revealed on the day of the performance.

"I feel the pride of the local residents in the music festival being held there is increasing year by year. The success of the program is widely attributed to their interest and support. I feel proud to be the artistic director and feel responsible to continue producing great programs," Chung said in a press release.

The rest of the performances during the festival will be held at the Alpensia Music Tent inside the PyeongChang Alpensia Resort from July 26 to Aug. 6. Visit gmmfs.com for the program schedule.

From July 24 to Aug. 8, talented young classical artists will perform with some of the world's best musicians who will become their instructors for the PyeongChang Music School. The 118 young performers selected from 10 countries will get the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with their renowned instructors. The instructors this year include Stephen Kovacevich, Laurence Lesser, Ruben Aharonian and Igor Naydin to name a few.

The music school aims to become a stepping stone for young musicians who seek to go global. The school offers a master class which is open to all students, the Rising Talent Series, student recitals and competitions. The master class is taught by one professor as an open class to all students participating in the music school while the Rising Talent Series is a set of performances featuring only young musicians who have extensive experience performing with well-known orchestras or have won in global competitions. The Rising Talent Series performance is scheduled for July 27 and Aug. 4.

Noted violinists Shin Zi-a and Clara Jumi Kang have been members of the music school and will participate as professors for this year's program. Renowned pianist Cho Seong-jin has also been a student at the music school.
