An official of the Ministry of Unification that manages inter-Korean relations was accused of selling classified information about North Korean defectors here, police said Sunday.
The official is suspected of having sold personal information of 48 defectors, including their home addresses and phone numbers, to a "broker" who helped them escape from the reclusive state between 2012 and 2015 for 14.7 million won ($13,000).
The broker, a North Korean defector surnamed Bae, is said to have sought the information to receive "unpaid fees" from the defectors.
An investigation is under way to find out whether the broker handed over the information to the North.

통일부 직원이 탈북브로커에 탈북자 주소 팔아
통일부 직원이 탈북자 주소지 정보를 탈북브로커에 돈을 받고 판 것으로 나타났다.
15일 국회 외교통일위 박병석(더불어민주당) 의원에 따르면 통일부 6급 공무원인 A씨는 2012~2015년 탈북자 48명의 집 주소를 탈북브로커 B씨 등에게 알려줬다.
이는 B씨가 '브로커 비를 떼먹는 사람들이 많아서 힘들다'면서 '탈북자들의 정착지 주소를 알려주면 사례하겠다'고 한데 따른 것이다.
A씨는 주소를 알려준 대가로 1천475만원의 뇌물을 받았다. 탈북자 1명의 주소를 알려주면서 평균 30만원 정도를 받은 셈이다.
A씨는 2004~2006년 통일부 산하 탈북민 교육기관인 하나원에서 근무한 이력이 있다.
B씨는 A씨로부터 확보한 정보를 다른 탈북브로커에게 넘겼다.
이 가운데 한 탈북브로커는 2010년 4월 탈북자에게 전화해 '왜 돈을 안 부치느냐'면서 '네가 어디 가든지 내 손바닥 안이다. 하나원을 통하면 다 알 수 있다'면서 주소지로 찾아가겠다고 협박해 돈을 받아내기도 한 것으로 나타났다.
검찰은 A씨를 공무상비밀누설 등의 혐의로 재판에 넘겼다. (연합뉴스)
