Korean actress Han Ye-seul, 37, has pleaded for a ban on the consumption of dog and cat meat.

The actress made the plea through Instagram on Tuesday, uploading a screen capture of the national petition page on the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae website.

The national petition page captured from Han Ye-seul's Instagram

The petition began on June 17, driven by an animal protection group. It had the support of over 100,000 people as of Wednesday.

"A bill to classify dogs as animal companions rather than livestock is now being proposed," the petition said. "If this bill is passed, dog butchery will be banned."

The presidential office is obligated to deal with the issue if more than 200,000 people sign the petition within 30 days.
