Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun has been named Industry Leader of the Year by a U.S.-based auto news media outlet in recognition of his unfaltering vision of developing smarter and more sustainable mobility solutions.
The Automotive News All-Stars is a renowned award with four decades of history. Chung won the title this year for his contribution to advancing the automotive and tech industry.
“I'd like to thank the Automotive News team for this special award,” Chung said. “It is an honor to be named the 2023 All-Stars Industry Leader. This award is in recognition of the entire Hyundai Motor Group family and partners all around the world who have worked so hard and devoted themselves to making sure that we achieve our vision of smart, sustainable mobility and progress for humanity.”
Automotive News stated that Chung has put the world's third-largest auto group on the map for electric vehicles and hydrogen power, in addition to luxury cars and purpose-built vehicles.
The media outlet also recognized Hyundai's vision to transform itself into a smart mobility provider, saying that Chung's concepts are bold, futuristic and abstract, as his aggressive push for advanced robotics, artificial intelligence and advanced air mobility creates a “mobility of things” covering movement in all forms.
Previous recipients of the title include Ford Executive Chair Bill Ford in 2020, General Motors Chair and CEO Mary Barra in 2018 and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne in 2014.
Under the leadership of Chung, Hyundai Motor Group is transitioning into a mobility solutions provider that aims to benefit the entire world, according to the automaker.
This is not the first time that he has won such a renowned award. Chung was named MotorTrend's Person of the Year in 2023. Last year, he also received the title of Visionary of the Year from Newsweek's Worlds' Greatest Auto Disruptors Awards. Chung also received the Issigonis Trophy from Autocar in the United Kingdom in 2021.
Chung started his presidency at Hyundai Motor's smaller affiliate, Kia, in 2005, and was promoted to vice chair at Hyundai Motor in 2009. The following year, he took on the top-ranking role as executive chair at Hyundai Motor Group.
