In January, Jang Won-young of K-pop girl group IVE won a civil lawsuit against Sojang, a YouTube channel notoriously known for spreading malicious rumors about Jang and many other K-pop stars. The Seoul Central District Court ordered the channel's operator — a woman in her 30s surnamed Park — to compensate the singer 100 million won ($75,000) for spreading false information and insults.

The ruling marks a new milestone in the K-pop landscape, where management companies have had a tough time taking legal action against online trolls on different social media platforms. Since most of these platforms were based overseas, it was challenging for Korean investigation agencies to identify them and hold them accountable.

But thanks to the support of Chong Kyong-sok, a veteran attorney at LIWU Law Group, Jang and her label, Starship Entertainment, succeeded in identifying Sojang's operator, who ended up deleting her controversial channel.
