Volvo Car Korea's XC40 premium compact SUV has achieved solid sales in the first half of 2024, driven by its enhanced safety and price competitiveness, the carmaker said, Tuesday.

The vehicle made its global debut in 2017, and has since solidified its position as one of the most sought-after SUVs both domestically and internationally.

According to the company, sales of XC40 SUVs reached 1,089 between January and June, the highest figure in the same segment among imported carmakers here.

This surpasses sales figures for its rivals, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA, BMW X1 and Audi Q3, during the same period.

According to data from the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), sales figures for the X1 and GLA came in at 828 and 365, respectively, during the same period. Those for Lexus UX and Audi Q3 also reached 342 and 142 in the first half.

The carmaker said the robust sales were driven by its cutting-edge safety functions represented by its latest advanced driver-assistance systems. These consist of a set of radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors, ensuring drivers can enjoy safer driving experiences on the road, according to the company.

The vehicle is also equipped with a string of other state-of-the-art safety systems, including rear collision warning and mitigation. Additionally, it features a pilot assist system that helps keep the vehicle within its lane and supports drivers in maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.

Another key upside of the vehicle is its competitive price. The XC40 Ultimate, which stands at the top trim level, sells for 54.3 million won ($39,200) here. The price range is more reasonable in Korea than other key marketplaces such as the U.S. and the U.K. The same trim sells for more than 70 million won in the two countries.

The strong popularity of the vehicle has been proven after the carmaker held online sales for two limited-edition versions. Last year, a total of 25 limited XC40 SUVs in sage green sold out in less than three minutes.

Drivers can also enjoy comfortable in-vehicle experiences with a suite of localized software installed in the car. Tmap, one of the most popular navigation apps in Korea, is available for XC40 drivers. It also comes with NUGU, the artificial intelligence-powered voice recognition service.
