Netflix released more information about the second season of its global smash hit “Squid Game,” building up anticipation for the survival thriller's Dec. 26 release.
The U.S.-based video streaming giant released a special teaser trailer and a poster for "Squid Game" season 2 at Geeked Week 2024, an event showcasing its shows, movies and games in Atlanta, Thursday (local time).
Released in 2021, "Squid Game" is a survival death game drama that follows the story of 456 people, including Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who are invited to play a mysterious death game with a grand prize of 45.6 billion won ($34.3 million).
Only one winner could take home all of these prizes, and the way the winner was chosen was based on Korean children's games.
As soon as the show was released, viewership exploded. The show became the most-watched series in Netflix history.
The second season will follow Gi-hun, who won the game in the first season, as he returns to participate again, vowing revenge against the organization behind this bizarre game. It will depict his fierce confrontation with the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who's in charge of the game.
The teaser trailer opens with Gi-hun awakening to an alarm sound and facing the Front Man. The trailer also offers glimpses of the pink-clad guards preparing for the new games, and the iconic giant piggy bank being filled with money.
At Geeked Week, Netflix also announced that the second season of its 2021 original Korean drama "Hellbound" will be released on Oct. 25.
Directed by Yeon Sang-ho, also known for his 2016 zombie movie "Train to Busan," "Hellbound" portrays the chaos and societal upheaval following a series of unexplainable supernatural events.
The biggest change in the second season of this thriller is the replacement of the main character from Yoo Ah-in to Kim Sung-cheol. Yoo, who played Jung Jin-soo, one of the main characters and the leader of the New Truth cult in the first season, was sentenced to one year in prison earlier this month for abusing illegal drugs between 2020 and 2022.
