Philip Goldberg, the U.S. ambassador to Korea, met with Gov. Lee Cheol-woo of North Gyeongsang Province on Oct. 8 to strengthen cooperation. The visit marked the first time Ambassador Goldberg has traveled to the province since his appointment as the 33rd U.S. ambassador to Korea in 2022.

The discussion focused on strengthening the relationship and exploring cooperation between North Gyeongsang Province and the United States, commemorating the 71st anniversary of the Korea-U.S. alliance. They deliberated on diversifying cooperation and enhancing collaboration in economic sectors.

Since the first sister city agreement with Ohio in 1984, exchanges between the province and the U.S. have long been ongoing. Lee expressed optimism that this visit would increase cooperation possibilities in various fields, including science and technology, culture and tourism. He highlighted that the U.S.' experience hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco last year could serve as a valuable example for North Gyeongsang Province, which is preparing for the 2025 APEC summit.

Governor Lee requested Ambassador Goldberg to share insights and know-how on preparing the APEC summit.

Ambassador Goldberg expressed admiration for North Gyeongsang Province's vision and goals, highlighting the importance of the Korea-U.S. alliance for the future of both countries. Goldberg also vowed to continue cooperation with the province to promote mutual development in various fields such as economy and culture.

Lee also emphasized the significance of the Korea-U.S. alliance, stating: "The Korea-U.S. alliance is more than a blood alliance. The current peace in Korea plays a significant role in strengthening Korea-U.S. relations. I hope the know-how from last year's APEC summit in San Francisco will be transferred to us. We will continue to strengthen the cooperative relationship between regions beyond national relations."

Ambassador Goldberg and his entourage also visited Hahoe Village and Bongjeongsa Temple to experience North Gyeongsang Province's traditional culture and appreciate the region's historical value.
