Korea's antitrust regulator said Monday it has requested the financial regulator to address unfair terms and conditions imposed by credit companies on their customers.

In its most recent review of 1,215 terms and conditions from credit card firms, credit loan providers and related companies, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) identified 45 problematic clauses and formally requested the Financial Services Commission to help change such terms that may limit or hinder consumers' interests and rights.

Among the issues identified were terms allowing credit card companies to change or discontinue services without notice, leaving customers vulnerable to sudden restrictions, the FTC said.

For instance, some agreements included ambiguous language, like "subject to the circumstances of affiliated partners," enabling companies to limit services unpredictably, it added.

The FTC annually conducts a review of new or revised financial terms and conditions introduced by banks and financial institutions. Based on its findings, the FTC identifies unfair practices and recommends changes to protect consumers. (Yonhap)
