LG Electronics earned a place in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the 13th consecutive year, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible manufacturing of consumer products, the global electronics maker announced on Tuesday.

With this achievement, the company has earned recognition among the world's 2,500 largest firms leading in environmental, social and governance (ESG) management. LG Electronics attributed the certification to its slogan, “Better Life for All,” which guided its efforts in sustainability.

According to DJSI World, published by global financial services company S&P Global, LG Electronics ranked in the top 10 percent of companies based on their adherence to ESG policies. The index revealed that the Korean company achieved the highest score in the Leisure Equipment & Products and Consumer Electronics categories.

No other Korean company has secured a spot in those categories over the past 13 years.

The index took into account the company's plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout incremental phases. The plans include reducing 54.6 percent of the emissions compared to 2017 directly and indirectly from manufacturing processes before it will neutralize carbon emissions by 2030 and transition to 100 percent renewable energies by 2050.

The company also plans to reduce emissions by 20 percent compared to 2020 from usage of its products. The company expects to do so with its globally most popular electronic appliances, namely its televisions, refrigerators, washers, dryers, ceiling-mounted air conditioners and monitors.

DJSI World also considered LG's efforts to empower the rights of its employees, which is part of the ESG categories. The company is currently a member of both the United Nations Global Compact and the Responsible Business Alliance, being bound by its own oath to obey the global standards for human rights and labor.

LG Electronics also earned top grades from other ESG assessment organizations this year. It received an “A” grade from the Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability four years in a row. Morgan Stanley Capital International also gave the same grade to the company for the fifth year in a row.
