The season's first cold wave advisory will be issued across Seoul on Wednesday, with temperatures forecast to drop sharply during the night.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said the advisory will take effect for all of Seoul at 9 p.m. before the temperature falls to a morning low of minus 12 Celcius on Thursday.
A cold wave advisory is issued when a morning low of minus 12 degrees or less is expected for two or more consecutive days.
The KMA said the cold snap will likely continue through Saturday.
The Seoul metropolitan government and the 25 autonomous district governments said they will operate a 24-hour situation room to minimize damage from the cold weather and monitor and respond to reports of damage.
The city government will also reach out to vulnerable senior citizens to check on their well-being while providing low-income senior citizens with lunch boxes and the homeless with warmers and other goods to help them keep warm.
Urgent news regarding the cold wave will be shared in real time on the city government's portal, Seoul Safety Nuri.
"We will respond thoroughly to make sure there is no damage from the cold wave, given that the lowest temperature is expected to drop to minus 12 degrees starting tonight, with the subzero temperatures forecast to continue day and night for the time being," a city official said. (Yonhap)
