Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has released another video showing a captured North Korean soldier undergoing interrogation, accusing Russia of using North Korean troops to "prolong and escalate" its war against Ukraine.
"Communication between captured North Korean soldiers and Ukrainian investigators continues. We are establishing the facts. We are verifying all the details," Zelenskyy wrote on X on Tuesday (local time), posting a four-minute-long video clip.
The post follows Zelenskyy's earlier revelation this week that Ukraine captured two North Korean soldiers in Russia's western Kursk region, along with a video of the men under interrogation.
"The world will learn the full truth about how Russia is exploiting such guys, who grew up in a complete information vacuum, utterly unaware of Ukraine, and who are being used by Russia solely to prolong and escalate this war," Zelenskyy noted. "Only Russia needs this war."
The new video showed one of the two captured North Korean soldiers lying in bed, answering questions from a Ukrainian investigator through a Korean interpreter.
The soldier said he was unable to retreat due to the wounds he sustained in battle and was captured by the Ukrainian military after staying in a forest for three to five days.
He also testified that his Russian identification document did not include his portrait and that he didn't know whether his name was on it, because the document was entirely in Russian.
Ukraine's military has previously claimed that North Korean soldiers deployed to fight for Russia were carrying fake identification documents with false Russian names and birthplaces to conceal their presence.
The captured soldier also said he had been trained to present pictures of a house and a gun when capturing a Ukrainian soldier, releasing those who picked the house while killing those who chose the gun. He added, however, that he is not aware of any instance of his unit capturing a Ukrainian soldier.
North Korea is estimated to have sent some 11,000 troops to support Russia in its war against Ukraine. Of those, 300 are believed to have been killed, with some 2,700 others wounded, according to the National Intelligence Service. (Yonhap)
