KBS decided to discard film footage shot at a UNESCO World Heritage site following accusations that it caused damage by hammering nails into the structures, sources said Wednesday.

The public broadcaster decided not to use the footage after a meeting on Friday with the city of Andong and the Korea Heritage Service, according to the sources. Last Monday, the city suggested KBS remove the footage filmed at the site.

Earlier this month, police launched an investigation into the KBS drama team for allegedly hammering 10 nails into historic buildings at Byeongsan Seowon, a UNESCO World Heritage site located in Andong, about 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

Among the structures affected is Mandaeru Pavilion, a national treasure located within the site. The nails were used to hang six lanterns during a drama shoot on Dec. 30.

KBS has issued an apology, vowing to address the damage, repair the site and implement measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The broadcaster also planned to revise its internal guidelines for filming at historic sites and issue another public apology on air in the near future. (Yonhap)
