A Chinese national residing illegally in Korea has been handed over to prosecutors after allegedly killing his former girlfriend, also a Chinese national in her 30s.

The Jeju Seobu Police Station announced Friday that it had referred the Chinese man in his 30s to the prosecution on charges of murder.

The man is accused of assaulting and killing his ex-girlfriend during an argument at a studio apartment in Yeon-dong, Jeju City, between 11 p.m. on Jan. 22 and 2 a.m. on Jan. 23. After the woman lost consciousness, the man contacted an acquaintance, who then called 119 for emergency assistance, according to reports. Police officers who arrived at the scene alongside paramedics found multiple signs of assault on the victim's body and immediately arrested him.

The man reportedly told authorities that he committed the crime impulsively during the argument, police said.
