The approval rating for the ruling People Power Party (PPP) fell to 34 percent, a poll showed Friday, amid the ongoing impeachment trial for President Yoon Suk Yeol.

According to the survey conducted by Gallup on 1,002 adults aged over 18 from Tuesday to Thursday, support for the PPP declined 5 percentage points from the previous week, while the figure for the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) rose 2 percentage points to 40 percent.

The pollster cited documents and testimonies contradicting the president's claims released by the prosecution during the final stages of Yoon's impeachment trial as a contributing factor to the decline.

In the same survey, 34 percent of the respondents supported DPK leader Lee Jae-myung as a president in the future, followed by Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo at 9 percent and Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo at 5 percent.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, with a confidence rate of 95 percent. (Yonhap)
