Former Korea Times President Chung Tae-yun passes away

Former Korea Times President Chung Tae-yun died of complications from acute pneumonia, Sunday. He was 80.

Chung served as the 11th chief executive officer of the English daily from 1986 through 1993. From 1974 to 1979, he was the managing editor of The Korea Times.

Chung began his journalism career at The Hankook Ilbo, a sister paper of The Korea Times, in 1955. He is a graduate of Chung-Ang University's Department of Law.

At The Hankook Ilbo, he worked as assistant city desk editor in 1963, international news desk editor from 1966 and assistant managing editor from 1968. He was acting managing editor of The Hankook Ilbo from 1972 to 1974 before moving to The Korea Times.

Chung's contributions to the English daily include the publication of The Seoul Olympian, the official newspaper of the Seoul Olympics in 1988. He was a media affairs advisor to the International Olympic Committee at the time and played a big role in attracting the publication rights for The Korea Times and promoting the Olympics within the international community.

It was also during Chung's presidency in 1974 that the Korea Times began to publish an edition for residents living outside the capital.
