Yu Dong-uk, 40, a homeroom teacher at Wolam Elementary School in the southeastern city of Daegu, has been developing a teaching method by actively using IT technology, especially Skype, in the classroom.

"I would like my students to have diverse dreams and build self-learning ability," Yu said during a presentation on smart learning at a media briefing held at Microsoft Korea's main building in Jongno, central Seoul.

Among a dozen teaching methods, he introduced a cultural exchange class between city and rural areas where students of each region interchange information about their own village by talking on Skype.

For example, children from rural areas bring and show their own thresher, and explain an irrigation canal to their peers in urban areas, according to the PowerPoint slides Yu prepared for the session.

"Aside from general information found on Internet portal sites, the students collect data from their home and neighborhood," Yu said.

"By playing a leading role, the children can develop a proactive mind-set in class," the teacher continued.

Another noteworthy program Yu invented with Skype was to connect students with those who achieved their dreams but are far away.

Yu has so far arranged meetings with mentors from Microsoft, Naver, Intel and UNESCO.

"After meeting Microsoft education sales manager Chun Je-min, the students say they want to work for Microsoft, and after talking with a weather forecaster, they say their future dream is to be a weather forecaster," Yu said.

"The educational philosophy of Microsoft is in line with Yu's teaching methods," Seo Eun-a, public sector manager of Microsoft Korea, said.

"We think the role of school teacher is to encourage children to have multiple dreams. And we will continue to support teachers to form their community where they can exchange teaching skills to provide better education at school," Seo added.
