Yoon Doo-joon, leader of K-pop act Highlight, will join the Army on Aug. 24 for active military duty.

Yoon will be involved in basic military training for five weeks before getting an assignment, his agency Around Us Entertainment said Wednesday.

The surprise announcement came only two days before the singer's enlistment and shocked many fans.

Yoon applied to serve as a conscripted policeman, but was refused. The vocalist of the team, Yang Yo-seob, also applied and was accepted.

Yoon will be discharged from the military on May 23, 2020.

He debuted as a leader of six-member boy band BEAST with the album "Beast Is The B2ST" in 2009. He and four other members ― Lee Gi-kwang, Yong Jun-hyung, Yang Yo-seob and Son Dong-woon ― did not re-sign with the group's original agency, but instead formed Highlight.

Yoon has also been a successful actor thanks to tvN TV series "Let's Eat." He starred in the first, second and the third season of the drama. But due to his sudden enlistment, the third series will be shortened from 16 to 14 episodes.
