Actress Lee Bo-young received the Best Actress Award for her role in tvN drama "Mother," at this year's Seoul International Drama Awards, the only such awards held in the country. This year saw 268 works from 56 countries submitted, the largest number in the history of the awards.
"Mother," the only Korean drama nominated for the competition category, received the Top Excellence Award for a miniseries.
The adaptation of the same-named Japanese drama, which aired its final episode in mid March, tells the story of an elementary school teacher, played by Lee, who finds one of her students is being abused by her birth mother and decides to kidnap the child and become her mother.
The 16-part drama was recognized for its unique interpretation of motherhood and emotional conflicts between birth mother and adopted mother.
"I'm grateful since I joined this drama, not expecting to get this award. I heard from many fans that they received comfort and felt their pains healed by watching this drama. So did I," the 39-year-old actress said during the award giving ceremony at KBS Hall in Seoul, Monday.
The Grand Prize went to German drama "Babylon Berlin," a crime period drama set in the chaotic Berlin of 1929. The Top Excellence Award for Short Drama was given to Germany's non-fiction drama "54 Hours," with its director Kilian Riedhoff taking the Best Director award.
In the hallyu drama category, for K-dramas recognized overseas, SBS drama "While You Were Sleeping" took the Top Excellence Award, while KBS' "Fight My Way" and JTBC's "Something in the Rain" received Excellence Awards. Actor Park Seo-joon of "Fight My Way" won the best actor award and actress Son Ye-jin of "Something in the Rain," was named best actress in the category.
