A record 73,000 elderly drivers voluntarily gave up their licenses last year in accordance with the government's campaign to reduce traffic accidents caused by older adults, police data showed Monday.
월요일 경찰청 자료에 따르면, 정부의 노인 교통사고 감소 캠페인에 따라 지난해 7만3000여명의 고령 운전자들이 자발적으로 면허를 반납한 것으로 나타났다.
According to the National Police Agency (NPA), a total of 73,221 drivers aged 65 or older voluntarily returned their licenses, marking a 6.1-fold surge over 11,913 such licenses surrendered in the previous year.
경찰청에 따르면 지난해 운전면허를 자진 반납한 만 65세 이상 운전자는 7만3천221명으로 이는 전년 1만1천913명의 약 6.1배에 달한다.
People aged 75 and above accounted for 71.5 percent, or 52,377, of the elderly drivers who gave up their licenses last year, the NPA noted.
지난해 운전면허를 자진 반납한 고령자 가운데 만 75세 이상은 71.5%(5만2천377명)를 차지했다고 경찰청은 밝혔다.
Behind the steep increase in the number of senior drivers giving up their licenses was the introduction of a support program for senior citizens surrendering their driver's licenses by local governments.
면허증을 반납하는 고령 운전자가 급증한 배경에는 지방자치단체에서 시행하는 고령 운전자 운전면허 자진반납 지원책이 도입이 있다.
Forty municipal governments, including Seoul, Daegu and Incheon, have implemented an incentive program that provides 100,000 won (around US$83) in a transportation allowance to senior drivers who voluntarily return their licenses.
서울, 대구, 인천 등 40개 지자체는 자율적으로 면허를 반납한 고령 운전자들에게 월 10만 원(미화 83달러) 상당의 교통비를 지원하는 인센티브 프로그램을 시행했다.
The NPA plans to provide 1.39 billion won out of its annual budget to local governments this year to share their payment of transportation allowances for elderly drivers returning their licenses.
