Corning, a U.S.-based glass manufacturing company, has unveiled its next generation of glass for smartphones, with improved scratch resistance and increased strength, its Korean unit said Tuesday.

Corning Gorilla Glass Korea President Jum Kim introduced the new product called Gorilla Glass Victus and said it will be used in Samsung Electronics' new smartphone.

"The new Gorilla Glass Victus can withstand drops from up to two meters and has twice the scratch resistance compared with our previous product," Kim told reporters during an online conference.

"As we mentioned in our press release that Samsung will be the first customer to adopt Gorilla Glass Victus in the near future, we expect Samsung's mobile group will be the first to apply the Victus," Kim said adding that he could not mention the specific name of the smartphone model due to an agreement with the client.

Samsung, the world's biggest smartphone maker, is scheduled to announce its new Galaxy Note smartphone and foldable smartphone on Aug. 5 at an online unpacked event. Given Samsung is one of Corning's long-time clients, industry analysts expect the Gorilla Glass Victus will be used on Samsung's Note 20 smartphone.

Corning also unveiled a test showing the strength of its new glass product.

In the test, the Gorilla Glass Victus achieved drop performance up to 2 meters when dropped onto hard and rough surfaces, while glass from its rival manufacturer failed when dropped from less than 80 centimeters. The Victus also surpassed its previous version, the Corning Gorilla Glass 6, with almost double the scratch resistance.

Corning said the company has continued to develop glass products that are more resistant to drop and scratch damage.

"In three of the largest smartphone markets in the world ― China, India, and the United States ― durability is one of the most important purchase considerations for smartphones, second only to the brand of the device. When tested against features such as screen size, camera quality and device thinness, durability was twice as important, and consumers were willing to pay a premium for improved durability," the company said.

Corning's Gorilla Glass products have been used in more than 8 billion devices by more than 45 device manufacturers.

Not only developing glass for smartphones, the company also has been manufacturing glass for wearable devices and vehicles.

"We have different kinds of business units and one of them has been working with multiple carmakers, supplying automotive glass. Corning has been betting big on the automotive market which has great potential," Kim said.
