A worker at a McDonald's branch in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, has been arrested for repeatedly filming his coworkers in a unisex changing room.

Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency said Thursday that the 25-year-old man, who had worked in the branch from June 2019 to December 2020, has been accused of secretly recording videos of his coworkers undressing in the changing room, using his phone.

The man had been hiding his phone in the room set to record video while his female colleagues changed clothes. Working seven hours per day, five days a week, he installed the camera before his shift and collected it after his shift.

The hidden phone was discovered by a female colleague on Dec. 12.

About 100 video clips of 20 female workers were found on the device. During the police investigation, the man reportedly stated that he took the videos "out of curiosity."

Through additional investigation, the police found thousands of photos and videos including child pornography downloaded from Telegram.

The police sent the case to the prosecution on Jan. 27, requesting that it indict him for violation of the special act on sex crimes and the act on the protection of children against sex offenses.

The female worker who had discovered the camera told a local news agency that the man usually got along well with their coworkers and was kind to everyone. She said that since the incident, she comes to work wearing her uniform to avoid using the changing room.

Following the incident, McDonald's Korea said they removed a shelf from the changing room so that no cameras can be installed. It explained that some 60 among 400 branches across the country are not equipped with separate changing rooms for male and female workers due to a lack of space.

The company said it would inspect the changing room on a daily basis and run sexual harassment prevention education programs for all employees at the branch every year.
