Yoon Suk-yeol of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) was elected as the new President of Korea early Thursday morning, taking the responsibility of leading the country for the next five years.
주요 야당 국민의힘 윤석열이 다음 5년 국가를 이끌어갈 책임을 업고 목요일 새벽 한국의 새 대통령이 됐다.
The former prosecutor general secured some 16 million ballots, or 48.59 percent, of 97.67 percent of votes counted as of 3:50 a.m.
이 전 검찰총장은 3시 50분께 97.67% 개표를 완료한 가운데 48.59%, 1천6백만 표를 얻었다.
Since Yoon was leading his rival ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) candidate Lee Jae-myung by 0.8 percentage points, he is expected to clinch the victory regardless of the uncounted ballots.
윤 후보가 경쟁 여당인 더불어민주당 이재명 후보를 0.8% 포인트로 앞서게 된 후로, 윤 후보는 미개표된 투표와 상관없이 승리를 거머쥘 것으로 예상되었다.
After confirming his victory, Yoon appeared at the National Assembly for a speech and described his win as "a victory of the people." "It was a heated race, and I learned many things during the campaigning," Yoon said.
승리를 확정 지은 후 윤 당선인은 연설을 위해 국회에 나타나 그의 승리를 "위대한 국민의 승리"라고 묘사했다. 윤 당선인은 "뜨거운 아주 열정적인 레이스였던 것 같다. 이 과정을 통해서 많은 걸 느끼고 배웠다"고 말했다.
"I believe the result is a great victory of the people, rather than a victory of myself, the PPP, Ahn Cheol-soo and the People's Party."
"이 결과는 저와 우리 국민의힘 그리고 안철수 대표와 함께한 국민의당 승리라기보다는 위대한 국민의 승리가 아닌가 그렇게 생각한다."
People's Party candidate Ahn merged his campaign with Yoon a week before the election.
안철수 국민의당 후보는 선거 일주일 전에 윤 당선인과 단일화를 했다.
"I also want to express my gratitude for DPK candidate Lee Jae-myung and Justice Party candidate Sim Sang-jung, and I highly evaluate our contribution for the progress of the Korean politics," Yoon continued.
윤 당선인은 이어서 "마지막까지 함께 뛰어준 민주당 이재명 후보, 정의당 심상정 후보 두 분께도 감사드린다. 대한민국 정치 발전에 우리 모두 함께 큰 기여를 했다는 점에 그 가치를 높이 평가하고 싶다"라고 말했다.
"When I take the office, I will honor the spirit of the Constitution and the National Assembly, and cooperate with the opposition party (the DPK) to better serve the people."
"대통령직을 정식으로 맡게 되면 헌법 정신을 존중하고 의회를 존중하고 야당과 협치하면서 국민을 잘 모시도록 하겠다."
