Workday aims to augment human intelligence with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), instead of replacing people, as the U.S.-based human resources and finance management software maker thinks the emerging technologies need to be human-centric and trustworthy, the chief technology officer of the company's Asia Pacific and Japan region said, Thursday.

"What's really important in terms of our philosophy with AI and machine learning, is that we still put humans in the loop in terms of what we do. Humans need to still make the decisions at the right time and the right place. And with the right context," Damian Leach, CTO of Workday Asia Pacific and Japan, said during a press conference in Seoul.

"This is really important at Workday. We believe we need to empower human decision-making through AI and machine learning. The purpose of really applying machine learning is so that the applications can work in unison with the employees. Since this means that organizations can reduce risk," Leach added.

While generative AI services like ChatGPT have gone viral, Workday said it's been over 10 years since the software company has applied AI and machine learning in its software in order to provide a more competitive service to its users.

"Workday embeds AI and ML into the core of its platform delivering superior adaptability and competitiveness to lots of customers," Leach said.

When comparing ChatGPT with its service, he said that ChatGPT is still in its infancy saying "the decision-making engine that we have has transferred 442 billion transactions a year by 60 million users."

"This focus allows us to be extremely accurate with our predictions. And it's not just a new idea like ChatGPT. When you look at ChatGPT and you think of a small child, because it's in its infancy and we've been doing AI and machine learning for over 10 years. We're a grown adult, we can make decisions faster and better, with more focus and accuracy," he said.

The CTO said that what makes its software different compared with others is the data it has and the special care it takes of it.

"Even with AI and ML, quantity means nothing without quality. While many technology providers rely on multiple integrations of different data repositories, Workday maintains clean and coherent data with a comprehensive single data model in a way its competitors cannot," he said.
