Police arrested an Egyptian national who was pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving and then found to be in possession of a single cannabis cookie.
The Namyangju Police Station in Gyeonggi Province said, Monday, that a report was filed on an Egyptian national in his 30s in Namyangju's Dasan-dong, northeast of Seoul, around midnight on May 22.
He was reportedly swerving between lanes showing signs of drowsiness. Another driver, who reported the incident, noted that when he honked to alert the erratic driver, it caused him to speed up abruptly to 170 kilometers per hour, seemingly trying to escape. This unusual behavior led the reporting driver to call the police, suspecting the man was driving under the influence.
Police officers pulled over the driver in question and measured his blood alcohol level, which indicated he had not been drinking.
However, the driver who issued the report informed the police that he saw the driver hiding something in the glove compartment as he pulled over. The police searched the vehicle and found a cookie about five centimeters in diameter.
According to a YouTube video released by the Korean National Police Agency, a drug taskforce tested the cookie and found it contained 51 grams of cannabis. If accurate, this would be around 1,000 times an acute edible dose.
The Egyptian national was referred to the prosecution, May 29, on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act and he is now under investigation for the use and trafficking of illegal drugs.
Police said the YouTube video detailing the case was released in an effort to raise public awareness about drug-related crimes, Monday.
