Failed projections and policy bungles deepen crisis
예상 실패 및 정책 실수가 위기 심화시켜The Korean economy is falling deeper and deeper into the mire.
한국 경제는 점점 더 깊은 수렁에 빠지고 있다.Throughout this year, government economists said the economy might stay weak in the first six months but rebound in the latter half. With less than a quarter left, however, key indicators are heading even lower.
올해 내내 정부 경제학자들은 상반기에는 경제가 약화된 상태에 머무르겠지만 하반기에는 반등할 거라고 전했다. 하지만 올해가 한 분기조차 남지 않은 상황에서 핵심 지표는 더 낮은 수치를 향하고 있다.There are few hopeful data or figures. A Statistics Korea report showed Monday that domestic consumption in August dropped by the biggest margin in 41 months. It was the steepest drop since March 2020 when the nation began social distancing in earnest to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
희망적인 자료나 수치는 거의 없다. 월요일 발표된 통계청 보고서에 따르면 8월 국내소비는 41개월만에 가장 큰 폭으로 감소했다. 코로나19 확산 방지를 위해 사회적 거리두기를 본격적으로 시행하던 2020년 3월 이후 가장 가파른 감소폭이었다.Government statisticians said the sluggish consumption was due mainly to the reduced spending power of households, who were up to their necks in debt amid high interest rates.
정부 통계학자들은 부진한 소비는 고금리 시대에 빚에 휘말린 가계들의 소비력 감소가 주원인이라고 분석했다.Yet the situation is unlikely to get better before it gets worse. JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, a top Wall Street banker, recently said that the world should prepare for a 7 percent interest rate.
하지만 상황이 더 나빠질 수는 있어도 좋아질 것 같지는 않다. JP모건체이스 최고경영자이자 월스트리트 최고 은행가인 제이미 다이먼은 최근 세계가 기준 금리 7% 시대를 준비해야 할 수도 있다고 언급했다.Worse yet, even the nation's corporate debt ratio against its GDP is now higher than it was during the Asian and global financial crises.
더 나쁜 점은, GDP대비 기업부채 비율이 아시아 금융위기와 국제금융위기보다 더 높아졌다는 점이다.All this leaves only the government, among the three major economic players able to bolster the sagging economy.
이 모든 상황은 3대 주요 경제활동 주체(정부, 기업, 가계) 중 정부만 약화된 경제를 개선할 수 있는 위치에 놓는다.
