The Korea Times now offers a standardized test for English language proficiency for non-native speakers.

The English-language newspaper's Global English Level Test (GELT) consists of six sections: vocabulary, reading, listening, grammar, chunk comprehension and K-vocabulary.

Opening its first test center in November, there are now ten GELT centers nationwide.

A GELT official said the test offers a new set of standards in English language proficiency.

"The GELT is an internet-based test. Test administrators and takers do not need to install a related application on their tablets or PCs," the official said.

"For this reason, it doesn't require a lot of test administrators. They also do not need to evaluate test takers' grades since the system automatically grades them."

The GELT evaluates test takers' command of the English language in the six categories and suggests ways to improve their English language skills based on their scores.

The test committee said it aims to open seven more test centers by the end of the year.
