Hyundai Engineering CEO Hong Hyeon-sung apologized Friday after tens of thousands of defects were found in the new apartment complex the company built in Muan County, South Jeolla Province.

Hong, in a statement, admitted a number of hazards have been reported at Hillstate Oryong and said the company will have discussions with the soon-to-be residents to fix the hazards.

"From now on, we'll start inspecting all the apartment buildings we've built to make sure they receive top-notch quality control ... This kind of problem is never found too late," Hong said in the statement.

Hillstate Oryong, built in the southwestern coastal region of the country, has 800 units in 12 buildings that are as high as 24 stories tall.

The company invited the future residents of the apartments late last month to inspect the buildings before they move in this month, where they discovered defects such as incomplete tiling and deformed walls in and outside the suites.

The findings prompted them to file complaints to the Muan County Office.

The authority then called experts to inspect the entire apartment town.

A three-day inspection found some 50,000 defects, including bent steel beams under the concrete filling and uneven exterior walls on some of the buildings.

The shoddy construction went viral as the victims shared photos of the hazards online.

Hong visited the complex Thursday and met the victims to apologize.

According to a post on an online community, each suite had an average of 150 to 200 defects.

Despite the severity of the issue, when the future residents staged a protest in front of the county office on May 2, the office officials responded the defects the residents had filed were mostly minor problems and major hazards were hard to find.
