Jamsil Station in southeastern Seoul has been the busiest subway station in the capital so far this year, data showed Thursday.

According to data compiled by Seoul Metro, one of the two operators of the subway system, 155,229 people used the underground station connected to Line 2 and Line 8 on average every day between January and April.

Gangnam Station, the busiest one last year, came next with 151,607 users.

Hongik University Station (147,356) came in third, followed by Guro Digital Complex Station (106,564), Seoul Station (105,265), Sillim Station (103,582) and Samseong Station (101,475).

Meanwhile, the least crowded one was Dunchon Oryun Station in eastern Seoul. On average, 1,465 people used the station each day.

More than 8.8 million people use the city's subway system daily, according to the data.

The data also showed an increase in the number of people who use it for free, with special passes given to adults aged 65 and over and people with disabilities, among others.

More than 91 million free rides were recorded during those four months, up by nearly 6 million during the same period in 2023. The subway operator attributed that significant rise to the country's aging population.
