By Lee Hae-rin

President Yoon Suk Yeol said Sunday that he is "appalled by the hideous act of political violence" in response to the Pennsylvania rally shooting that came as a minor injury for U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump but killed one and critically injured two of his supporters who attended the rally.

"I am appalled by the hideous act of political violence. I wish former President Trump a speedy recovery. The people of Korea stand in solidarity with the people of America," Yoon said Sunday on X, formerly Twitter.

Korea's ruling and opposition parties condemned the attempted assassination.

"Former U.S. President Trump was shot and wounded during a campaign rally, and one of his supporters was killed," said ruling People Power Party (PPP) spokesperson Ho Jun-seok in a written commentary.

"Political terrorism is a threat to democracy and cannot be tolerated for any reason … Political terrorism is the product of extreme politics and hate politics. The PPP strongly condemns political terrorism that threatens democracy and will take the lead in eradicating extreme politics and hate politics," he said.

The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea's (DPK) Rep. Lee Jae-myung also said on social media Sunday, "An unbelievable event has happened," adding, "Violence and terrorism for any reason should not be tolerated. We urge a thorough and decisive response to a serious crime that has shaken the foundation of democracy."

DPK spokesperson Han Min-soo said during a press briefing Sunday, "We condemn the political terrorism against former President Trump and will fight to prevent the ghosts of hate politics from wandering around."

"Political terrorism is a serious challenge to democracy," Han said, "It cannot be justified for any reason and should never be allowed to take place."

"The DPK has suffered from political terrorism against former leader Lee Jae-myung," he said, "The DPK strongly condemns political terrorism that destroys democracy and will take the lead in eradicating hate politics."

In January alone, Korea has seen two attacks targeting politicians.

Former DPK chairman Lee was attacked by a knife-wielding assailant during his visit to Busan on Jan. 1.

On Jan. 25, a teenage boy struck PPP Rep. Bae Hyun-jin in the back of the head with a rock. She sustained no major injuries.
