KB Insurance is launching an insurance rider to support customers' expenses for hiring a lawyer in the case of suspected sudden unintended acceleration while driving, the company announced Wednesday.
A non-life insurance arm of KB Financial Group, KB Insurance said it will newly add special terms and conditions concerning sudden unintended acceleration as it has become a hot potato issue concerning car accidents.
The phenomenon refers to a car accelerating unexpectedly and uncontrollably against the driver's will.
The accident is mostly accompanied by severe damage to the car and even fatal accidents.
Such accidents have been increasingly reported over the years, with more computer-assisted driving systems and sophisticated mechanical parts being used in cars.
The cause of sudden unintended acceleration, however, has been hotly debated between drivers and carmakers. For individual victims, proving that the accident is not caused by their errors but by mechanical flaws has been costly in terms of time and money.
"Under the circumstances, we're glad to introduce the terms and conditions to better support our clients concerning legal disputes on sudden unintended acceleration," KB Insurance said.
The company emphasized that it is the first non-life insurer in Korea to come up with the policy.
Under the terms and conditions, the company will cover up to 80 percent of the fees paid to the lawyer as a retainer, up to 3 million won ($2,240).
The policy only covers lower court trials.
"We'll continue to develop essential products for our valued customers," KB Insurance said.
