Sohn Young-kwon, former president and chief strategy officer (CSO) of Samsung Electronics, will join the board of Arm, the U.K.-based processor intellectual property (IP) company said Thursday (local time).

Arm said in a press release that it appointed Sohn as its new board member. This is the second time for Sohn to have a seat on Arm's board.

Arm is one of the most important IP providers for companies designing mobile application processors. It licenses its architecture to chip designers and holds a dominant position in mobile devices.

Sohn served nine years as Samsung's president from 2012 to 2021. He was in charge of strategies for global innovation, investment and new business creation. He is known for leading Samsung's $8 billion acquisition of Harman International in 2017. He is now Harman International's chairman of the board, a board member of Cadence Design Systems and founding managing partner of Walden Catalyst Ventures.

"Having previously served on the Arm board of directors, my long history with the company provides unique perspectives into how critical Arm technology is to the world that relies on it," Sohn said.

"The Arm compute platform will be central to future innovation, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), and I look forward to being part of the team that will drive the future of computing."

"The depth of experience that Young (Sohn) brings will be invaluable to Arm as we continue to diversify our business and work to address the very real and complex computing challenges in the age of AI," Arm CEO Rene Haas said. "Young has a fantastic track record from a long career of leadership positions at some of the world's most important semiconductor companies, and I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to define the future of computing."
