The city government in Seoul is searching for symbolic and catchy names for each of its eight Han River Buses, part of a water transportation system set to launch next year, officials announced on Sunday.

The public transportation service will connect the Han River's major hubs in Seoul's southwestern Magok area and southeastern Jamsil. The city will introduce eight ships by the end of this year through a trial phase, with operations commencing in March 2025.

The ships will be equipped with a cafeteria and a bicycle rack, along with 199 seats. The fee will be priced at 3,000 won ($2.25) and those who use the city's Climate Card, can use it through a season ticket system.

Through this naming contest, which will begin on Wednesday, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is searching for meaningful names that will display the characteristics of the city and the river. Normally, ships are named after astronomical terms, nature and city names, but this time, officials said they were looking for something more innovative and creative.

The contest will run from Wednesday to Oct. 7, and any Korean citizen can participate. Each person can submit up to three names after filling out the application form, which can be found at the city government's website.

The city government plans to announce the final eight names in November, and each winner will be given a gift certificate worth 200,000 won.

"Han River Buses, Seoul's representative water transportation method, will begin its official operation in March next year under the name given by the people," Joo Yong-tae, head of Seoul's Future Han River Headquarters, said, adding, "We will carry out the project smoothly so that it is loved by not only Seoul citizens but also foreigners with safe and pleasant public transportation."
