A butterfly-themed logo that also incorporates a traditional Korean relic has been chosen as the official emblem for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Korea next year, a government committee said Friday.

Korea will host the APEC gathering in the country's southeastern city of Gyeongju in November next year, under the theme of "Building a Sustainable Tomorrow."

The emblem, disclosed during an APEC ministerial meeting in Lima on Thursday, was inspired by a butterfly that contributes to ecosystem prosperity, according to the committee overseeing preparations for the summit. It also symbolizes the will to "connect" with APEC member nations, help them "prosper," and "innovate" the member countries and the region.

It also includes a human face-patterned roof tile of the Silla Dynasty (57 B.C.-A.D. 935) in a token of Gyeongju's historic roots and as a message welcoming visitors to the ancient dynasty's capital, according to the committee. (Yonhap)
