General Motors (GM) Korea's Chevrolet Trax Crossover won the glory of being hailed the top exported vehicle here in 2024, extending its winning streak for two consecutive years on the solid popularity of the affordable small SUV in the United States, the carmaker said Thursday.

According to GM Korea, the number of overseas sales of the vehicle reached 295,099 last year. Its accumulated sales also topped the symbolic figure of 500,000 abroad in only about two years after the launch of the car in 2023.

The carmaker's Trailblazer SUV also ranked fourth in terms of overseas sales. GM Korea sold more than 178,000 Trailblazer vehicles in non-Korean territories last year.

Buoyed by the robust sales of the two strategic SUVs, the carmaker was able to set a new record in overseas sales last year for the first time since 2014.

"GM Korea will secure an annual production capability of over 500,000 vehicles with a focus on strategic models and enhance our sustainable growth in Korea," an official from the carmaker said.

Shipment of the Chevrolet Trax Crossover also soared by 11 percent in December 2024 from a year earlier, according to the carmaker. A total of 33,587 Trax vehicles were sold abroad during the same period, the highest monthly figure since its debut in March 2023.

"The Trax Crossover is drawing stronger-than-expected popularity on its stylish exterior design, spacious interior and impressive driving performance," the official said.

GM Korea said it will continue placing its strategic focus on boosting exports of the two vehicles this year. The Trailblazer model, which started export in 2019, also attained outstanding accumulated overseas sales of 830,000 up to 2024.

GM Korea's exports were worth $70.8 billion (102.3 trillion won) in 2024, according to data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. This was the second time in the carmaker's history that the figure topped $70 billion since 2023 when its exports reached $70.9 billion.

The carmaker's key export market is the U.S., which accounted for 88.5 percent of the firm's total exports last year. Korea accounted for some 5 percent of GM Korea's total sales during the same period.
