Lee Dong-wook is poised to captivate audiences with a refreshing departure from his prior roles as he returns with tvN's rom-com "The Divorce Insurance," embracing a relatable, grounded comedic style.
In his latest project, the 42-year-old actor will portray Noh Ki-joon, a genius actuary who has become economically and mentally exhausted after going through three divorces.
"This leads him to think, 'What if we consider divorce as a disaster?' He starts to think that traffic accidents aren't the only type of accident and wonders if it would be possible to quantify and insure divorce, which leads him to launch a divorce insurance product," Lee said as he described his character during an online press conference for the drama, Monday.
The path to bringing this audacious concept to life was far from easy. Actors Lee Joo-been, Lee Kwang-soo and Lee Da-hee join the task force dedicated to launching this unique insurance product. A dynamic team of colleagues — who have experienced divorce firsthand — team up to calculate the financial impact of heartbreak and, perhaps, unravel the very mystery of love. As Ki-joon dives deep into the world of breakups, he can't help but reexamine his own relationship history.
Lee Dong-wook said the drama is his welcome return to the rom-com genre.
"My previous works were mostly genre pieces with intense fantasy characters. This time, I wanted to do a project that people could watch comfortably. I wanted to express Ki-joon's loveliness well," he said.
"After a seven-to-eight-year hiatus from romantic comedy, returning to the genre has been a pleasure for me. The playful dynamic of comedic interplay (between cast members) was thoroughly enjoyable," he added.

Director Lee Won-suk, known for his visually stunning and witty direction in films like "How to Use Guys with Secret Tips" (2013) and "Killing Romance" (2023), is taking on his first drama project.
"I'm incredibly nervous. Honestly, I wasn't confident because I thought working on a drama would be difficult, and I turned down every offer," he said. "But after reading the script for the first episode of this project, I suddenly found myself agreeing to do it. The script itself was different from other works. It was unique and had an original worldview within the drama."
The director said the drama doesn't entirely focus on divorces.
"It's a story about people who create their own world within themselves rather than fitting into the world around them. Failure in love is also a new beginning. It's about how all decisions and happiness originate from oneself," he explained.
Regarding the point of view of his directing, he wanted to show something more exaggerated, something different from reality.
"I wanted to create a sense of dissonance by placing realistic stories and characters within a fairytale-like setting. I also aimed to portray the world surrounding the characters in a more exaggerated way," he said.
Lee Joo-been plays the role of Kang Han-deul, an insurance underwriter who wants to start a new life through divorce. She describes her character as "someone who is very patient and considerate, which can sometimes make her seem indecisive, overly cautious and frustrating. However, she is also someone who originally didn't assert herself much, but through a new beginning, she transforms into a confident person who says everything she wants to say."
Lee Kwang-soo will portray a growing character Ahn Jeon-man, a risk surveyor at the insurance company, and Lee Da-hee will play Jeon Na-rae, a special advisor quant (quantitative analyst) and Ki-joon's cool first ex-wife, showcasing a charismatic figure who analyzes divorce numerically.
"The Divorce Insurance" will be released on tvN and OTT platform Tving on March 31 and simultaneously available to global viewers through Amazon Prime Video.
