The floor leader of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) on Sunday urged acting President Han Duck-soo to quickly appoint an opposition-recommended Constitutional Court justice or face consequences.
"If Prime Minister Han fails to fulfill his constitutional duty by April 1, the DPK will make a major decision," DPK floor leader Park Chan-dae said, without specifying what action it will take.
Park argued "sufficient" time has passed to conclude that Han has "betrayed" the public's trust by neglecting to carry out his duties in accordance with the Constitution and the law.
"The National Assembly, as a constitutional body, has a responsibility to uphold the constitutional order, and the DPK will fully exercise all powers granted to it," he said.
The opposition-controlled National Assembly had impeached then acting President Han late last year, one day after he refused to appoint additional justices to the Constitutional Court. Han was reinstated by a Constitutional Court decision last week.
Observers say the opposition party may seek impeachments against not only Han and Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok but also against other Cabinet members.
Last month, the Constitutional Court ruled that then acting President Choi's decision to withhold the appointment of opposition-recommended Justice candidate Ma Eun-hyuk last year is an unconstitutional act, infringing upon the rights of the National Assembly. (Yonhap)
