Pope Francis headed down to Daejeon on Friday, using a KTX train instead of a presidential helicopter offered him by Cheong Wa Dae.
His destination was Daejeon World Cup stadium, where he led a Mass celebrating the Assumption (ascension into heaven) of the Virgin Mary on his second day in Korea.
"He was supposed to travel via a helicopter, but changed the plan," an official from the Catholic Church in Seoul told reporters. He did not say exactly why he opted to go by train to Daejeon, but said, "It's not just because of the weather. We assume that he wanted to meet more ordinary people."
The weather was foggy and windy in the morning in Daejeon. Some observers assumed that the bad weather prompted him to avoid using the chopper.
However the official's comment fits the personality of the Pope, who is known for his down-to-earth approach to people.
"Using a helicopter was optional from the beginning. We also have had an option of taking a KTX train," the official added.
The 4019 KTX train left Seoul Station at 8:46 a.m. and arrived at Daejeon Station at 9:42 a.m.
His entourage used four of the train's 18 cars. Almost 500 passengers were aboard the same train. They initially did not know about the Pope's proximity, but there was eventually an announcement that the Pope was one of the passengers, sparking loud cheers.
The train was nonstop to Daejeon.
Shin Sang-hee, 40, a train attendant, had the privilege of serving the Pope.
She was quoted by local media as saying, "Each time I brought him things, he smiled at me and thanked me. I could feel humbleness from him."
The Pope gave her his autograph on a copy of a book, with a short note saying in Spanish, "Dear Shin Sang-hee, May God bless you. And please remember me in your prayers."
As he got off the train, people surrounded him, reaching out to him with hands and smiles. The Pope hopped into a Kia Soul car to move to the stadium.
As the car moved slowly, he shook hands with people and patted a baby on its head with blessing words.
Later in the day, he moved to Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province where he met with young Catholic leaders from other parts of Asia.

KTX 기장·승무원 "영광…특별한 축복"

15일 오전 프란치스코 교황이 탄 대전행 KTX 제4019호에서 여객 서비스를 담당한 여성 승무원은 교황을 처음 대한 느낌을 이같이 전했다.
프란치스코 교황은 방한 이틀째인 이날 오전 10시 30분 대전월드컵경기장에서 열린 '성모승천대축일' 미사를 집전하고자 숙소가 있는 서울에서 대전으로 왔다.
이 승무원은 '교황께 필요한 물품을 가져다 드릴 때마다 '친절하게 대해주셔서 고맙다'며 미소를 보이셨다'며 '몸에 배인 겸손함이 모든 행동에 묻어나오는 느낌이었다'고 했다.
그녀는 교황의 다양한 메시지를 담아 번역 출판된 책에 교황 서명을 받는 '특별한 축복'을 누렸다.
자신을 한없이 낮추며 소탈한 행보를 보이는 성품답게 교황은 자신의 서명 위에 '축복과 함께 저를 위한 기도를 부탁합니다'라고 스페인어로 적었다.
이 승무원은 '외려 나에게 기도를 부탁하는 모습에 감동을 느꼈다'며 '교황께서 남긴 화합과 사랑의 메시지를 읽으며 지치고 힘들 때 위로를 얻을 수 있을 것 같다'고 말했다.
서울역에서 오전 8시 46분께 출발한 이 KTX 열차에는 일반 승객 500여명도 함께 타고 있었다.
애초 임시열차로 편성해 일반 승객의 예매를 받은 코레일은 교황과 수행단 등이 탑승할 것에 대비해 객차 2량(3·4호차)을 비워둔 상태였다고 설명했다. 열차에 교황이 탄 것을 승객들이 뒤늦게 알고 감격해 했지만, 경호 상의 이유로 해당 객차로 오가지는 못했다.
교황은 4호차 2C 좌석을 이용했다. 통역을 맡은 정제천 신부도 동승했다.
'교황의 KTX'는 두명의 베테랑 기장이 운행을 맡았다.
두 기장은 '교황을 안전하게 모시는 소임을 다했다는 것에 개인적으로 영광스럽다'며 '우리나라에서의 일정 내내 편안하게 계시면서 많은 이에게 축복과 위로의 메시지를 주셨으면 좋겠다'고 말했다.
대전역 플랫폼에서 유흥식 천주교 대전교구장과 화동의 영접을 받은 교황은 에스컬레이터를 이용해 곧바로 대합실로 올라왔다.
도착 20여분 전부터 대합실에 줄지어 서 있던 100여명의 시민은 교황의 모습이 시야에 들어오자 환호하며 박수를 쳤다. 교황도 특유의 환한 미소를 보이며 손을 들어 화답했다.
시민들의 곁을 지나던 교황은 아빠의 목말을 탄 여자 아이에게 다가가 머리 위에 손을 얹으며 강복하기도 했다.
주인공인 김리아(5)양의 부모 김홍석(33)·박혜진(33)씨는 '스페인어로 외친 환영의 인사말을 듣고 교황께서 다가오신 것 같다'며 '리아에게 오셔서 미소를 지으며 강복하신 것을 큰 영광으로 생각한다'며 기쁨을 감추지 못했다. (연합뉴스)
