North Korea has conducted a test of an ejection launcher that helps fire missiles from submarines in a sign that the communist nation is making progress in its efforts to develop a submarine-based ballistic missile, a news report said Friday.
The land-based test simulated the initial stage of boosting a missile out of a submarine launch tube and is a sign that the rogue state is moving ahead with plans for underwater missile strike capabilities for a future nuclear-tipped missile, the Washington Free Beacon reported, citing unidentified defense officials.
U.S. intelligence agencies observed the test in late October at a facility known to be a key development center for the North's submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) program, the report said, citing two officials with access to intelligence reports.
Last month, a U.N. think tank said, citing commercial satellite imagery, that the North has built a new test stand on its eastern coast to research and develop submarine-based ballistic missiles that can be launched from submarines.
The assessment from the website 38 North, run by the U.S.-Korea Institute at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, was in line with South Korea's intelligence that the North is believed to be developing a submarine-launched ballistic missile.
In September, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a report to a lawmaker that there is an indication that the North is developing an SLBM. A military source also said intelligence agencies spotted signs that the North has developed a ballistic missile launch tube for submarine use. (Yonhap)

"북한, 잠수함미사일 발사관 지상실험 실시"<美관리>
북한이 최근 함경남도 신포의 잠수함발사 탄도미사일(SLBM) 지상 실험장에서 미사일 사출 실험을 했다는 주장이 나왔다.
미국의 보수성향 매체 '워싱턴프리비컨'은 미국 정보 관리들의 말을 인용해 '미국 정보 당국에서 지상에서의 SLBM 사출 모의실험이 지난달 말 실시됐음을 포착했다'고 21일(현지시간) 전했다.
관리들은 이 실험이 '발사 과정의 초기 단계'라면서도 북한이 '잠수함에서의 핵공격 능력 확보를 꾸준히 추진하고 있음을 뜻한다'고 설명했다.
SLBM을 발사할 때는 잠수함 안에서 미사일 엔진을 가동시키는 방법과 일단 물 밖으로 사출시키고서 가동시키는 방법 중 하나가 쓰이는데, 일반적으로 후자의 방법이 널리 쓰인다.
북한 군사문제 전문가인 조지프 버뮤데스는 지난달 28일(현지시간) 북한전문 웹사이트 '38노스' 기고문을 통해 신포에서 미사일 수직발사장치 실험용으로 보이는 시설이 위성사진에서 관측됐다고 밝혔다.
버뮤데스의 설명에 의하면 이 시설은 가로 약 35m, 세로 약 30m 크기의 콘크리트 공간에 위치한 약 12m 높이의 발사대 모양 구조물과 부속 건물들로 구성돼 있다.
또 버뮤데스는 지난달 19일 기고문에서 정체불명의 신형 잠수함이 신포 조선소에서 발견됐다고 밝혔고, 한국 정부의 한 소식통은 북한이 러시아에서 수입한 골프급 잠수함 해체·역설계해 최근 진수시킨 새 잠수함과 버뮤데스가 지적한 잠수함이 동일하다는 의견을 보였다.
미국 국방정보국 선임정보분석관을 지낸 브루스 벡톨 미국 안젤로 주립대 교수는 워싱턴프리비컨과의 인터뷰에서 '기술적 문제 때문에 북한이 실제로 SLBM을 배치하는 데 몇 년이 걸릴 것'이라면서도 '만약 누군가 외부에서 돕는 사람이 있다면 그 기간이 상당히 짧아질 수 있다'고 설명했다. (연합뉴스)
